The United States Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) issued a statement tonight condemning the laws passed by the National Assembly of Republika Srpska, citing that these laws are unconstitutional and undermine the Dayton Peace Agreement.

“As highlighted by the State Department spokesperson, the United States will firmly oppose any actions by domestic political actors that jeopardize the security and stability of Bosnia and Herzegovina. We mean what we say – we denounce the laws enacted by the RS National Assembly last night, as they violate constitutional principles and contradict the Dayton Agreement,” stated the US Embassy in BiH.

Furthermore, they expressed their expectation that political leaders in BiH will immediately halt activities that threaten the constitutional order and the very foundations of peace in the country.

In response to a State Department statement following the Court of BiH’s ruling against Dodik, RS President Milorad Dodik and BiH Presidency Chairwoman Željka Cvijanović asserted that the statement indicated they “took note” of the ruling rather than endorsing it.

Last night, the RS National Assembly enacted legislation that prohibits the functioning of the Court and Prosecutor’s Office of BiH, the BiH Investigation and Protection Agency (SIPA), and the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council of BiH (HJPC) within that entity.

This development followed the Court of BiH delivering a first-instance verdict against Dodik for his failure to comply with the decisions of the High Representative, resulting in a one-year prison sentence and a six-year ban from holding the office of President of the RS.
