Sarri Faces Early Season Challenges; Marušić Set to Step Up as Centre-Back
The upcoming Serie A season is set to kick off, marking the ninth consecutive year that Adam Marušić will don the Lazio jersey.
The Montenegrin international has filled various roles during his nearly ten years in Italy, and he may find himself in a similar situation as the new season begins.
Lazio will commence their new campaign away at Como tomorrow (Sunday, 18:30 PM), and before the match by the lake, coach Maurizio Sarri faces challenges in assembling a solid defense. This is where Marušić could step up, as he often does.
According to “Corriere dello Sport,” Alessio Romagnoli will be serving a suspension, raising concerns over Patrick’s fitness following an injury, as well as Samuel Zigo, whose future at “Olympique” remains uncertain.
The seasoned coach finds himself with just two available defenders – Mario Hila and Oliver Provstgord. Should complications arise, Marušić is prepared to take charge of the defensive line.
“I spoke with Sarri, and he asked if I could assist the team as a center-back due to the injuries to Patrick and Zigo. I assured him that I could give it a try, even though I haven’t played in that position before. When Simone Inzaghi was coach, I did serve as a third center-back, but operating within a four-man defense is completely different,” explained the national team player.
In the lead-up to the new season, Sarri confirmed that Marušić would serve as one of the two deputy captains alongside Matija Zakanji.
