Former Serbian President and leader of the Social Democratic Party, Boris Tadić, remarked that “Serbia is currently in a very distinct situation where the government has effectively disrupted the constitutional order, and citizens have already imposed a state of emergency.”

Tadić expressed, “I don’t believe it matters any longer whether or when (Serbian President Aleksandar) Vučić will declare a formal state of emergency,” during an interview with the Danas newspaper on Saturday.

He noted that Vučić “is simply in a phase typical of any autocrat nearing the end of his reign.”

“This phase is characterized by desperate measures and a tendency towards violence, as well as a frantic shift in narratives daily. One day he threatens, and the next day he ‘fatherly’ pleads,” Tadić concluded.

He emphasized that “calling elections is undoubtedly the only way to exit this crisis.”

“The fact that a regime that used to call elections almost annually is now evading them clearly demonstrates their awareness of how poorly they would perform in such elections,” Tadić stated.

He cautioned that “every day they postpone calling for elections is dragging the country into a more profound crisis and endangering the security of the nation and its citizens.”

“It’s absurd for the regime to call for an end to the blockades while avoiding elections, which would only help stabilize the situation in the country. Thus, it is the regime that fosters this atmosphere by refusing to call elections, not the students and citizens,” Tadić asserted.
