Prime Minister Milojko Spajić and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban have signed agreements in Budapest, establishing a framework for collaboration on strategic initiatives vital for the advancement of Montenegro.
The leaders of the two nations have initialed the Agreement on Cooperation in Infrastructure Development along with the Agreement on Cooperation in Telecommunications, Information Technologies, and Law Enforcement, creating opportunities for projects aimed at enhancing living standards, promoting economic growth, and leveraging potential.
“By collaboratively selecting projects and securing financial resources while adhering to all legal and environmental criteria, Montenegro now has the opportunity to resolve development challenges in close cooperation with an EU member state, particularly in areas like road construction and railway modernization,” the government stated.
Spajić remarked that significant efforts have been made over the past two years to build trust and position the country to sign interstate agreements with EU members.
“We have fostered relationships leading to this pivotal moment in our collaboration. The groundwork has been laid, and we can anticipate the realization of projects in the forthcoming years that will drive economic development and enhance quality of life. This sets the stage for Hungary, as an EU member state, to assist us on this journey,” said Spajić.
He emphasized that advancing highways and modernizing the railway system are critical for connecting with both the region and Europe, enabling sustainable utilization of the Port of Bar’s advantages.
In addition to infrastructure initiatives, both governments have agreed to finalize cooperation in telecommunications, information technology, and law enforcement development.
Orban noted that the agreements are more than just a foundation for economic collaboration; they are a testament to the successful establishment of trust, paving the way for even more intensive cooperation in the future.
The launch of a joint economic commission will facilitate the monitoring of the agreements and bolster connections between the public and private sectors, Orban added.
“Infrastructure development is crucial to our partnership, as it plays a vital role in establishing trade routes that include Montenegro, yielding significant economic benefits for both nations,” Orban expressed.
He mentioned that full support for Montenegro’s European integration will continue, with a unified goal of completing negotiations by the following year. This support includes expert guidance and scholarships for Montenegrin students to enhance their academic and practical skills while studying in Hungary.
“Montenegro has effectively met the criteria set forth in the EU negotiation process, and I am confident it can close each negotiation chapter swiftly. Hungary will persist in supporting Montenegro throughout its integration process and during the initial years of membership, recognizing the challenges that lie ahead,” Orban stated.
The agreement signing in Budapest was attended by Minister of Internal Affairs Danilo Šaranović, Minister of Transport Maja Vukićević, and Minister of Public Works Majda Adžović.
