Estonia Reiterates Strong Support for Montenegro’s European Aspirations
Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, Filip Ivanović, held a meeting in Tallinn with Estonia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Margus Tsahkna. This meeting served as a platform to reaffirm the strong and allied relations between the two nations and explore opportunities for enhanced collaboration.
Minister Tsahkna welcomed Deputy Prime Minister Ivanović warmly, expressing his satisfaction with the visit. He highlighted that the political ties between Montenegro and Estonia are exceptionally robust. He specifically pointed out the significance of direct air links between the countries, which bolster economic and social connections. Tsahkna also noted the fruitful development of bilateral cooperation, particularly in digitalization, where the Estonian e-Governance Academy (eGA) is actively engaged in projects within Montenegro.
Deputy Prime Minister Ivanović thanked his host for the warm reception, indicating that the visit presents an outstanding opportunity to reiterate the Montenegrin Government’s dedication to fortifying relations with Estonia and enhancing cooperation in the realms of economy, tourism, research, and education.
He also acknowledged the value of Estonia’s partnership within NATO, emphasizing the importance of the allied relationships between the two nations. Ivanović specifically expressed gratitude for Estonia’s ongoing support of Montenegro’s European integration efforts, asserting that EU membership is Montenegro’s primary foreign policy objective.
Deputy Prime Minister Ivanović updated Minister Tsahkna on Montenegro’s accession progress, aiming to complete all negotiation chapters by 2026 and achieve EU membership by 2028. He affirmed that all parliamentary parties in Montenegro are unified in their support for the European path and that public backing for integration remains robust. Additionally, he mentioned that Montenegro is fully aligned with the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy.
He further stated that Montenegro endorses the EU enlargement policy, conditioned solely on the individual merits and accomplishments of each candidate country.
Minister Tsahkna commended Montenegro’s achievements in the European integration journey, recognizing it as a leading example in the region for reforms and advancements. He expressed confidence that Montenegro will be the next nation to join the EU, reiterating Estonia’s unwavering support for the EU enlargement policy. He assured Deputy Prime Minister Ivanović that Montenegro could depend on Estonia’s political and expert assistance throughout the entire accession process.
