Trump Announces 30% Tariffs on Bosnia and Herzegovina and 35% on Serbia
US President Donald Trump has declared import tariffs of 30 percent on goods from Bosnia and Herzegovina and 35 percent on those from Serbia.
These new customs duties for Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, along with updated rates for several other nations, will take effect starting August 1.
These rates are lower than the previously postponed reciprocal tariffs announced by Trump in early April, which were set at 37 percent for Serbia and 35 percent for Bosnia and Herzegovina. Those tariffs were deferred for 90 days shortly after their announcement.
Trump communicated the new tariffs via letters addressed to the leaders of the respective countries: Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and Željka Cvijanović, the current chairwoman of the BiH presidency.
The letters maintain consistent language, differing primarily in the specific customs rates assigned to each country.
Trump begins his letters by expressing that he is “greatly honored” to convey a message signifying the strength and commitment of the U.S.-country trade relationship and emphasizes that the U.S. is willing to continue collaboration with these nations, despite what he termed a “significant trade deficit.”
He encourages the leaders to engage in the “extraordinary US economy, the market that is by far the number one in the world.”
The president noted that his administration has determined it is essential for the U.S. to “end the long-term and very persistent trade deficits” resulting from tariff, non-tariff, political, and trade barriers present in countries like Bosnia and Serbia.
Trump stated that the set tariff rates—30 percent for BiH and 35 percent for Serbia—are still insufficient to fully address trade disparities and deficits.
He indicated that no tariffs would apply if those countries or their companies choose to conduct manufacturing within the U.S.
Furthermore, Trump cautioned that tariff increases would follow if these nations retaliate by imposing additional tariffs on American imports.
“If for any reason you decide to increase your tariffs, then regardless of the amount you choose to raise them by, it will be added to the 35 percent we are charging,” Trump warned in his correspondence to Vučić.
On Monday, Trump revealed additional tariff rates for various other countries through his Truth Social platform.
He announced a 25 percent tariff for Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, and Kazakhstan; 30 percent for South Africa; 32 percent for Indonesia; 35 percent for Bangladesh; 36 percent for Cambodia and Thailand; and 40 percent for Laos and Myanmar.
