Young Handball Players Battle Valiantly Against the Giants

The Montenegrin women’s handball team faced a tough loss against world vice-champion Denmark, ending the match at 28:26 during the second round of Group B at the European Women’s U19 Championship in Podgorica.

This marked the first defeat for the Montenegrin team in the championship, following their victorious opener against Lithuania, where they won 36:31.

In a thrilling encounter, the Montenegrin team delivered a commendable performance, demonstrating resilience against one of the top national teams globally, remaining competitive until the very end.

Under the guidance of Coach Igor Marković, the squad illustrated their capability to contend with the best, fostering optimism as they prepare for their crucial match against Iceland this Saturday, which will determine their progression to the main round.

The match began with Montenegro seizing an early 3:0 advantage within the first five minutes, maintaining their lead until the closing stages of the first half. However, Denmark managed to turn the tide and headed into halftime with a narrow lead of 13:12.

Despite Denmark’s dominance, Anđela Guberinić and her teammates fought tenaciously, closing the gap to just one goal (27:26) with only 30 seconds remaining on the clock.

Denmark, however, secured their victory by netting a goal in the final seconds, concluding the game at 28:26.

Natalija Lekić was the standout performer for Montenegro, scoring seven goals, while both Bojana Peličić and Anđela Guberinić contributed four goals each. Teodora Rončević also made notable contributions, racking up 10 saves.

Tomorrow is a rest day for the championship, and Montenegro will face Iceland on Saturday in a pivotal match for advancement to the main round.
