Montenegrin Women’s Handball Team Advances to European Championship Main Round and Clinches Spot in World Championship
Montenegro has secured its position among the top 12 national teams in Europe for the under-19 category!
Under the guidance of coach Igor Marković, the team advanced to the main round of the championship in Podgorica, clinching victory against Iceland with a score of 36:31 in their final group match.
Moreover, their participation in next year’s World Championship is now guaranteed!
This remarkable achievement is well-deserved for Anđela Guberinić and her teammates, who showcased their skills in the initial rounds (securing a win over Lithuania and narrowly losing to Denmark). With the crucial victory against Iceland, they have proven they belong among the elite of European handball.
Throughout the match at “Morača,” Montenegro maintained control, with Iceland only leading once at 10:9 in the 14th minute, highlighting the dominance of our team in setting the game’s pace.
By halftime, the score stood at 19:16, and the decision came early in the second half—five consecutive goals resulted in a lead of 26:18 by the 39th minute, following Maja Ceklić’s attempt for the opposing team, paving the way to their second victory in this prestigious tournament.
Elena Mitrović was instrumental in securing the win, netting 10 goals and earning the title of player of the match. Natalija Lekić contributed seven goals, while Sanja Andrijašević and Ksenija Gašević each scored six.
Sunday will be a rest day during the championship, with the main round set to begin on Monday. The young “lions” are sure to face the Czech Republic, who achieved a perfect score in the group stage. Their second opponent will be determined based on the outcome of tonight’s match between Hungary and Poland.
