Merge local and parliamentary elections
Podgorica, (MINA) – Montenegro is in need of a respite from frequent electoral events, and it is time to create legal provisions that unify local elections with the regular parliamentary elections scheduled for 2027.
This conclusion was reached during a meeting between Deputy Prime Minister Aleksa Bečić and Slovenia’s special envoy for the Western Balkans, Anžej Frangeš.
Bečić expressed gratitude, as noted by his office, for Frangeš’s unwavering and genuine support for Montenegro’s European aspirations, as well as for his efforts during his term to bolster ties between the two amicable nations.
He remarked on the positive visibility of Montenegro’s achievements at every turn.
“We are currently witnessing an unprecedented, relentless, and bold campaign against the tobacco and drug cartels, alongside all other criminal activities,” Bečić stated.
According to him, Montenegro is now recognized as a nation resolute in its fight against crime.
“We are no longer seen as a country where institutions and high officials serve illicit activities. That era is a dismal chapter of our history,” Bečić noted.
He emphasized that vetting remains a critical priority for the state.
“In terms of integrity within the security and defense sector, we have already achieved notable results. Hundreds have faced suspension, disciplinary actions have been initiated, and individuals have been dismissed, arrested, and prosecuted,” Bečić explained.
He added, “Purging the system of compromised individuals and unwarranted influences must be a collective response from all governmental organs and branches.”
“This is essential for laying the groundwork for a healthy and secure future for Montenegro,” Bečić concluded.
The parties involved in the discussions agreed on the necessity for Montenegro to pause frequent electoral processes and to implement legal amendments unifying local elections with the parliamentary elections scheduled for 2027.
“This will enable society’s resources over the next two years to focus on closing the remaining negotiation chapters on the European path, thereby allowing Montenegro to seize the historic opportunity it faces and finally complete the negotiation process,” the statement indicated.
