Kosovo’s President Vjosa Osmani stated on Thursday that she possesses “reliable information” indicating that US President Donald Trump recently averted a potential escalation of tensions between Serbia and Kosovo.

In her speech in Washington, Osmani remarked that this incident occurred “recently,” although she did not provide specific details.

“Based on the security intelligence I receive daily, we understand that President Trump has prevented a potential escalation of the situation, if I may say so, recently. We are not discussing 2023 or 2020; we are referencing very, very recent events,” Osmani explained.

During her address, she recalled the September 2023 attack in Banjska, labeling it an “act of aggression” orchestrated by Serbia, which she claimed was “entirely planned within Serbia.”

“We should not overlook the possibility, as it has already occurred,” Osmani responded, mentioning the armed assault by a group of Serbs on the Kosovo Police that resulted in the death of Sergeant Afrim Bunjaku.

“Since this has happened before, prevention and deterrence are crucial. Sometimes, this requires more than a military presence; it also necessitates political leadership. It may take a phone call, a warning, and that is precisely what happens when America takes the lead,” she further asserted.

Trump has often cited his mediation between Kosovo and Serbia as a prime example of the US’s role in preventing conflict.

During Trump’s first term in September 2020, under his watch at the White House, Kosovo and Serbia signed the Washington Agreement on Economic Normalization.

This agreement, which also included the recognition of Kosovo’s independence by Israel, has yet to be fully implemented.
