A group of residents from Novi Sad displayed a banner stating “The villain always returns to the scene of the crime” as Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić arrived at the bridge construction site near the city.
This visit marked Vučić’s first return to the area since the tragic collapse at the entrance of the Novi Sad Railway Station on November 5 last year, as reported by the Beta agency.
Under tight police supervision, Vučić toured the bridge construction site over the Danube, which will link Petrovaradin and Kovilj.
The civic councils of Novi Sad had announced on social media their intention to “welcome Vučić” and called for a gathering, but a police cordon blocked their attempts to reach the site on foot, by bicycle, or by car, without explanation.
Meanwhile, police allowed organized groups of Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) supporters to enter the construction site, where they were gathered for a rally in support of Vučić.
“Return to Ćaciland!” citizens shouted at Vučić’s supporters.
Earlier, Beta reported that a police cordon was preventing citizens of Novi Sad from reaching the bridge construction site to “greet” President Vučić.
As the citizens attempted to proceed, a police cordon was established, barring their access without an explanation.
The Novi Sad Citizens’ Choirs had previously declared their intention to “offer Vučić a welcome”.
It was planned that the gathering would take place at 10:15 a.m. on Put Šajkaški odreda, at the entrance to Novi Sad.
This marked Vučić’s first attempt to visit the Novi Sad area since November 5 of last year.
“Vučić is coming to Novi Sad in the morning. Let’s give him a welcome,” the citizens’ assemblies announced on social media.
“We will gather to provide President Vučić with a warm welcome from Novi Sad to demonstrate that we are not fatigued,” a representative of the Novi Sad citizens’ assemblies informed N1.
