Martina Knežević Shines as Young Lionesses Move Closer to Quarterfinals with Victory Over Poland
The Montenegrin women’s handball team has made significant progress towards securing a spot in the quarterfinals of the European Women’s U17 Championship in Podgorica.
In their opening match of the main round, Anđelina Orbović and her teammates triumphed over Poland with a score of 30:27, aiming to emulate the juniors’ performance who finished among Europe’s top eight.
The top two teams from each group, as well as the two best third-placed teams across the three main round groups, will advance to the quarterfinals.
The match started off unfavorably, with Poland leading 6:3 in the first minute. After leveling the game at 6:6 in the 18th minute, our team entered a strong phase, scoring five consecutive goals—three of which were netted by Martina Knežević—bringing the score to 11:6 by the 23rd minute. The first half concluded with a score of 13:11.
Coaches Miloš Perović and Bobana Krstović’s team began the second half on a high note, with Anđelina Orbović scoring in the 40th minute, extending the lead to 19:15. The path to victory became clearer midway through the second half, and when Knežević scored again in the 47th minute for 22:17, it was evident that victory was within reach.
Knežević was the standout performer for our team, scoring 11 goals and earning the title of player of the match, while Anđelina Orbović contributed with seven goals.
Goalkeeper Maša Dubljević also shone with an impressive 10 saves.
Looking ahead, our national team will face Croatia in the second round of the main round on Tuesday at 5 PM at “Morača”.
