Triumphant Double Crown in the Toughest Season

Jadran dominantly concluded another season in the domestic water polo arena, achieving a double crown and presenting a formidable challenge to its rivals. Primorac, in particular, who had briefly shown promise last season with a Cup victory, found itself taking two steps back this time, exiting the regional Premier League without securing a single point.

In contrast, the team from Novy managed to claim two cups and comfortably remained in the regional elite, despite an early exit from the European Cups that resulted in fewer games than they were accustomed to.

– This season was undoubtedly the toughest I’ve faced since becoming head coach – Jadran coach Petar Radanović stated to “Vijesti”.

– We encountered numerous issues at the beginning, starting the season without injured players Jovan Vujović and Uroš Vučurović, although we performed well in the Champions League qualification tournament in Barcelona. We had a chance to advance, but the absences and lack of experience ultimately cost us – Radanović remarked.

The initial phase of the season was essentially a leap into the unknown for Jadran.

– As a coach, I didn’t find it disheartening, but we had faith in our efforts and gave it our all. I can confidently say that winning the Cup at the end of last year was the turning point of our season. It uplifted us; after that final and the win against Primorac, everything became much easier for us. The team entered 2023 with reduced pressure, heightened motivation, and a clear ambition to finish as the best – Radanović asserted.

In the final playoff series, Jadran secured three victories. They convincingly won twice in Škver, while the match in Kotor proved to be much tougher…

– I did not anticipate that we would clinch the title in just three matches. At the season’s outset, it seemed unrealistic, especially as Primorac had entered with ambitions and a strong squad, regarded as equals in the quest for trophies. However, changes occurred during the season, and the relegation from the regional Premier League notably affected Kotorani towards the end. We capitalized on that and earned our celebration – Radanović elaborated.

Radanović emphasizes two names as pivotal in this season’s success.

– I must recognize goalkeeper Darko Đurović, who has improved significantly in his second season, and Vasilij Radović, who has finally stepped into the role he was meant for, becoming a leader for Jadran. I expect him to be part of the national team in the next two to three years. Additionally, several young players took advantage of their opportunities – Lazar Vukićević, Strahinja Gojković, Danilo Stupar… While some players needed to perform better, we have a plan to address that in the forthcoming period.

Looking ahead, Jadran is set to compete in Europe next season, though it’s still uncertain if they will receive an invitation to the Champions League’s group stage.

– There are rumors surrounding that, but nothing is confirmed yet. For the Champions League, we also need more experienced players so that the younger ones have real leaders in the pool. However, we just wrapped up this season, and there will be ample time to discuss this – stated Jadran’s coach.

While Jadran collects trophies, the overall condition of Montenegrin club water polo raises concerns.

– This is a long-standing issue. Factually, Jadran finished eighth this season in the regional league, and the next three clubs from Montenegro will compete in the second tier of the regional competition. Thus, we are lagging behind teams aspiring to the top. The situation is not ideal, but we must work with the resources we have – concluded Radanović.
