Notable Fathers and Their Heirs

In Montenegro, water polo can undoubtedly be regarded as a family sport. Particularly in Kotor and Herceg Novi, the passion for the game and the water is interwoven through generations, almost a part of their DNA. In our U17 team, no less than seven players are the children of renowned athletes who have clinched medals at prestigious competitions.

Srđan Janović’s journey into water polo began with his father, Nikola, a long-serving captain of the Sharks, and his uncle Mlađan.

“Growing up with my father and uncle’s matches, alongside the successes of our national team, made my choice of water polo seem natural. Cheering for my father, who captained a national team that was among the best in the world, inspired me to dive into this sport with the hope of proudly listening to my country’s national anthem one day, achieving great results,” Srđan shared with the Association’s website.

“I’ve heard many stories, from how my father began playing to his silver medal at the European Championship. However, I didn’t witness his professional career because I wasn’t born yet,” remarked Tadija Matijašević, son of Sinisa Matijašević.

The experiences of other young “sharks” reflect a similar narrative; growing up amidst water polo has significantly influenced their choices, but without family pressure.

“Nikola never pressured me into playing water polo, nor did he try to steer my sports decisions,” Srđan Janović explained.

“My father encouraged me to pursue any sport. I initially tried judo, then swimming, and finally found my way to water polo,” said Radivoj Radanović, son of Petar Radanović.

The story of Danilo Rajević, whose father Dragan was a celebrated goalkeeper, exemplifies the importance of family tradition while also highlighting that a true love for water polo is essential.

“I began training in Qatar at six, but was sidelined from the pool due to health issues two years later. I remained in sports, coaching basketball, yet I carried the regret of leaving water polo. As I grew older and stronger, I returned to my passion two years ago,” shared Danilo, who now plays for Novi Belgrade.

Every father hopes their children exceed their achievements, but having a prominent parent can weigh heavily on young athletes.

“It’s a challenge, as my father’s legacy sets high expectations, but it also drives me to elevate my game. His success motivates me to push harder to realize my potential,” said Relja, son of Nenad Vukanić, a former FRY national team player.

For Strahinja Gojković, son of Vladimir Gojković—who has won medals in major competitions and is currently a coach—his father’s accomplishments are a source of satisfaction.

“I aspire to achieve great heights in my sports career and aim to become the best player in the world; surpassing his achievements is one of my goals,” stated Strahinja.

This is why advice from family about water polo is invaluable for young players.

“I receive guidance and feedback, we discuss my performance after every match, all aimed at enhancing my game,” commented Tadija Matijašević.

“His support is crucial to me. My brother and I often go swimming with him, asking questions or seeking advice on swimming techniques. I appreciate that he never pressures me; we only discuss water polo when I choose to,” Srđan Janović added.

“Since returning to water polo, we talk about my training every day. His advice is incredibly valuable and has strengthened our bond as father and son,” noted Danilo Rajević.

“We communicate a lot, which I see as an advantage. He doesn’t insist on discussing these topics, but I frequently initiate conversations about water polo,” highlighted Strahinja Gojković.

For these young men stepping into the limelight, water polo is more than just a sport. They recognize their privilege, despite the sacrifices involved.

“Water polo gives me the chance to travel worldwide and forge many friendships while fulfilling my sports aspirations,” Relja Vukanić succinctly expressed.

“I believe that teamwork and camaraderie with my teammates greatly contribute to my personal development. Traveling and making new friends offer unique experiences,” Danilo Rajević reflected.

“For me, water polo embodies love for the sport and a desire to prove myself. Building good relationships with teammates, along with companionship and communication, are vital,” emphasized Tadija Matijašević.

“Water polo encompasses everything for me—it’s a remarkable experience, competition, social interaction, and travel,” affirmed Todor Vukčević, son of Milan Vukčević.

When asked about their goals, their responses converge—winning medals for Montenegro at major events. As Srđan Janović put it:

“The pinnacle moment would be hearing the national anthem of Montenegro play as we stand on the podium after winning gold at the World, European, or Olympic Games. That is the ultimate dream for every athlete.”
