The Lionesses Pursue Olympic Visas to Face Germany, Slovenia, and Paraguay
As they aim for their fourth consecutive appearance in the Olympic handball tournaments, Montenegro is set to compete against Germany, Slovenia, and Paraguay.
The final decision came during the match for 5th place at the World Championship held in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, where the Netherlands triumphed over Germany with a score of 30:26, thus securing their qualification for the tournament in Montenegro.
The three events that will determine the last six qualifying participants for the Olympics will take place from April 11 to 14, with the IHF announcing the host locations at a later date.
Per Johansson’s team showcased dominance from the outset, having built a double-digit lead by the start of the second half, making it evident that Bojana Popović’s team has an arguably easier opponent on the road to Paris.
In contrast, Germany faced a setback in the quarter-finals against Sweden, losing 27:20, with a double-digit deficit established in the first half.
The Netherlands will also compete for Olympic spots alongside the Czech Republic, whom they previously defeated 33:20 in the World Championship group stage, as well as Spain and Argentina.
In the first qualifying tournament, Sweden, Hungary, Japan, and Cameroon will vie for two spots in the City of Light.
Had the Netherlands lost, a fascinating scenario would have unfolded—Montenegro potentially facing off against its two former coaches, as Slovenia is led by Dragan Adžić and “lala” Per Johansson.
