“Every Win with Portugal Holds Special Meaning for Ronaldo”
The Portuguese national football team has demonstrated its ability to contend in the Nations League, securing the title for a second time since the league’s inception in 2019.
Portugal also triumphed in the inaugural edition, defeating the Netherlands 1-0 in the final. This past Sunday in Munich, they bested Spain in a thrilling championship match, winning 5-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw over 120 minutes of play.
Alvaro Morata was the unfortunate figure in the penalty shootout, missing a crucial spot-kick in the fourth round. One of the contributors to Portugal’s goal in regulation time was Cristiano Ronaldo, who netted his 138th international goal, leveling the score at 2-2.
Nuno Mendes also scored for Spain to equalize at 1-1. The goals for the “Furies” came from Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Oyarzabal.
“What a joy, first for this generation that truly deserves this title and then for our families, everyone… My children were here in Munich, along with my wife, brother, and friends,” Ronaldo expressed. He added, “Winning a trophy with Portugal is a unique experience. Although I have many titles with clubs, nothing compares to triumphing with the national team… These are tears of joy and satisfaction from a job well done,” CR7 emphasized.
Spain, the reigning champions of Europe from the previous year, graciously acknowledged Portugal’s victory.
“We aimed to inject more energy into the game by substituting in Jeremy Pino and Alex Baena. While we achieved some success, it wasn’t sufficient—we lost control in the final moments,” commented Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente.
He also discussed the decision to introduce Lamin Jamal in the 106th minute, stating, “He’s fatigued, having had little rest from an arduous season with Barcelona. At just 17 years old, we must manage his workload carefully,” concluded De la Fuente.
