Luka Bogavac, the young basketball talent from SC Derby, delivered an outstanding performance in the AdmiralBet ABA League. Despite the team’s loss to Partizan in Belgrade (95:80) on Sunday, the guard scored 24 points (8/16 shooting), along with five rebounds and three assists, achieving an impressive index rating of 23. This match marked his highest scoring effort in the regional league at the “Belgrade Arena,” matching his career-best index score of the previous season against Mornar in Bar.

Similar to Bogavac’s individual performance, the SC Derby team showed promise against Partizan, leading in the first half before the “black and whites” seized control toward the end of the half to secure the victory.

– From a team standpoint, I believe our game against Partizan was one of our better performances this season. We displayed significant progress compared to our first match against them at home. We played with greater maturity, confidence, and freedom. The first half was arguably our best this season – Bogavac shared his thoughts with “Vijesti”.

Young players relish competing against teams in the Euroleague.

– I had a solid scoring game, but it was a team effort that facilitated that success. I maintain a consistent approach toward every game. While I won’t pretend that playing against Partizan didn’t provide an extra boost of motivation, especially considering their atmosphere. This is a team built for the Euroleague playoffs and possibly the strongest Partizan squad in recent years. That certainly added to my motivation. Ultimately, I gave my all, and I believe that showed – Bogavac explained.

Interestingly, the 21-year-old has had his two best outings this season in the AdmiralBet ABA League against Partizan and Red Star, where he scored 23 points in Podgorica.

– I closely follow the Euroleague and those teams. Competing against them heightens my motivation. I thrive in big games; I feel at home and energized. Knowing these teams are among Europe’s elite fuels an additional drive within me. For such matches, I aim to enter motivated, relaxed, and unburdened. I’d like to keep that going – Bogavac admitted.

After 19 rounds in the regional competition, SC Derbi holds 12th place with six wins and 13 losses, a performance that could have been better.

– Perhaps others had higher expectations. We certainly anticipated winning some games that slipped away from us. A number of matches were decided by just one or two points, which didn’t go our way. Had those games shifted in our favor, the conversation might be different. However, crucial matches lie ahead. We’ll take away the lessons we need to, and I hope we’ll rectify the mistakes from the first half in our upcoming games.

Next up, SC Derbi plays on Sunday (17) at home against Krka.

– Honestly, we must win this game. Playing on our home court means we need to come out on top. We’ll give our all; they have some strong players, and we have to approach the game with determination to secure the win – Bogavac asserted.

Following the match against Krka, the team will prepare for the Montenegrin Cup, aiming to defend their title. The final will be hosted in Bijelo Polje, with the draw yet to take place.

– It’s too early to discuss the Cup. We need to focus on our important game against Krka first. Let’s win that and then begin our preparations for the Cup gradually.

Playing for the national team fills me with pride.

Luka Bogavac has established himself as an essential player for the Montenegrin national team, which is gearing up for matches against Germany (February 20) and Sweden (February 23) in the European Championship qualifiers. Montenegro is in a favorable position, with only a significant upset preventing Boško Radović’s team from qualifying for EuroBasket.

– Representing my country is a tremendous source of pride; it always feels special. I have only positive experiences with the national team. We’re on the verge of advancing from the group stage. Securing as many wins as possible in the qualifiers is crucial for a favorable position in the draw, ensuring an easier group at the European Championship. Each win is vital for us. Our first match against Germany needs no introduction. I hope the fans will recognize this, come out to support us, and fill the arena – Bogavac concluded.
