Silence Would Only Leave Another Mark

The Institution of the Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms has expressed its condemnation regarding what it describes as the “reincarnation of past ghosts,” highlighted by the recent erection of a monument to Pavle Đurišić in Gornje Zaostro.

“While the stance of the Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms towards criminal acts is unequivocal and does not differentiate between any form of hatred or persecution targeted at nations, religions, or races, it is evident that we face a test of common sense regarding the nature of crime and the appropriate responses to it. It is vital to stress that individuals cannot be compelled to alter their internal feelings, which often relate to personal conscience and awareness; however, these feelings cannot serve as a justification or endorsement for crime, whether directly or indirectly,” the statement indicates.

This situation reiterates the fact that Montenegro has yet to grasp the principles that a healthy society must internalize and reject regarding its historical context.

“Thus, the institution denounces the glorification of criminal acts and the veneration of individuals whose (mis)deeds are thoroughly chronicled in credible historical accounts. Moreover, remaining silent on such matters would only contribute to the ongoing stains on our social reality. If there is anything to be memorialized, it should foremost be the victims of these crimes. Additionally, the implications of this monument are clear for the descendants of those who suffered at the hands of such acts, regardless of perspective,” the announcement stated.
