We Anticipate New Council Members Will Enhance Transparency, Legality, and Accountability in RTCG’s Operations
The Center for Civic Education (CCE) has expressed its appreciation for the Parliament’s recent decision to appoint new members to the Council of Radio and Television of Montenegro: Marijana Camović Velicković, Janko Ljumović, and Nikola Tatar.
They particularly emphasize the selection of Marijana Camović Velicković, a candidate put forward by CCE, Human Rights Action (HRA), and the Women’s Rights Center (CŽP), backed by 26 other NGOs, as a unified call to enhance integrity and professionalism within the public service.
“We recognize that the ruling majority, through this appointment, isn’t altering the current power dynamics within the RTCG Council. This likely influenced the different perspectives towards candidates for this Council, especially in contrast to those for the Agency for Audiovisual Media Services. However, we anticipate that the new appointees will enhance transparency, legality, and accountability in the RTCG’s operations, which is vital at a time when the public service faces increasing pressure from narrow party interests,” the statement noted.
“Rather than a consistent path towards Europe, we are witnessing a trend where Montenegro makes one step forward—like this election—and quickly follows with two steps back, evident in the ongoing challenges faced by the media regulator. This erodes public confidence in the government’s genuine intentions and hampers the credibility of the EU integration process,” the CCE added.
