Following a 50-day hiatus due to the World Championship, the Budućnost Bemax handball team is making its return to the spotlight. Under the guidance of Bojana Popović, the team is faced with a daunting challenge: in the upcoming six Champions League matches, they need to overcome a four-point deficit against either Brest or Debrecen, for whom they have a disadvantage in the head-to-head record (they will compete against the Hungarians in Podgorica after losing 27:22 in the away match), aiming for a 6th place finish in Group B.
It is evident that significant victories are essential, with no game to be considered unwinnable. The first opportunity to turn the tide comes this Sunday against ĆSM in Bucharest.
– This will undoubtedly be a challenging match, as Bucharest is considered one of the top favorites to win the Champions League. It’s a significant test, especially after a lengthy break, but I’ve observed a tremendous energy among the players. I have faith that we can maximize our performance in this match, and we must maintain a positive mindset – stated Bojana Popović.
The head coach recognizes that Adrijan Vasile showcases two or three quality players in each position.
– Grace Zadi didn’t participate in Podgorica, but I believe she is back following the World Cup, and Kristina Neagu is also prepared. They are eager to prove to their fans that they can perform significantly better than in the first half of the season, which featured several ups and downs. We need to seize our opportunities and strive for a performance similar to the one in Podgorica – Popović added.
During the first clash at the “Bemax Arena”, Budućnost managed to hold their ground for a while but ultimately succumbed to a 29:24 defeat.
– ĆSM is an excellent team, boasting numerous renowned players. Just mentioning Neagu, Zadi, and Kobilinska highlights their quality. They possess more experience than we do, so a significant battle lies ahead of us – remarked Armel Atingre.
The French goalkeeper remains optimistic not only about the Bucharest match but also the remainder of the Champions League, believing that advancing to the round of 16 is realistic.
– Some players have found their rhythm, and as a collective, we are stronger now that we’ve gelled as a team, especially since we were new at the beginning of the season. I genuinely believe we have a chance. It will be quite challenging, but deep down, I feel we can reach the knockout stage.
