It has been 22 years since the last World Water Polo Championships were held in Fukuoka, and a notable connection is that Felipe Perone was involved in both events in some capacity.
This morning, the legendary Spaniard conducted a water polo masterclass against Montenegro (11:7). Back in 2001, as a 15-year-old, he supported the “fury” from the audience in their pursuit of a second world title, according to Madrid’s “As”.
Following another outstanding performance from the 37-year-old veteran (he netted five of his team’s 11 goals), he was affectionately dubbed “His Majesty, Felipe Perone.”
One of the major Spanish sports newspapers commended our team in its online edition.
“Montenegro is a youthful, dynamic, and well-prepared team, and the first two quarters were fiercely contested in the pool,” adds “As”.
With victories over Montenegro and Serbia in the initial rounds of the Water Polo World Cup, Spain has secured the top spot in their group and a direct path to the quarterfinals.
Conversely, the “sharks” aim for a win against the “dolphins” to claim second place against a significantly easier opponent in the next round.
The match between Montenegro and Serbia is set to take place on Friday at 5 PM.
