Montenegro and Hungary are set to face off in a pivotal match to commence the European Championship in Germany, marking only their second meeting in history.
The Montenegrin handball team will kick off the EHF Euro tonight at 20:30 against a familiar opponent from the continental championship in 2016, where Hungary clinched victory with a score of 27:20 in Gdańsk.
As the match in Munich approaches, the Montenegrin “lions” have been viewed as underdogs, with Hungary considering them the least formidable opponent in the group.
“On paper, Montenegro is less strong than Serbia and Iceland, which elevates the importance of this opening match,” remarked Hungary’s coach, Ćema Rodriguez. Nemzetisport

“Just as I believe we can secure victories in all three group matches, Montenegro is equally capable – that’s what makes our group particularly challenging,” the Spanish coach added.
He also highlighted the strengths of both teams.
“Montenegro’s greatest asset is their rapid transition after conceding a goal or regaining possession; we must be vigilant to avoid a swift counterattack when we score. Our strength lies in team cohesion and adaptability, with my players being quite astute,” explained the former Spain centre-back.
When discussing Montenegro, he spotlighted a key player.
“If I were to choose, it would be goalkeeper Nebojsa Simić, who poses a challenge for any opponent,” concluded Rodriguez.
