I Refuse to Let My Name Be Sullied

It has been exactly 30 days since he was appointed as the new sports director of Buducnost, with the club president Bosko Kovačević mentioning that the executive director Novak Novakovic (who was let go soon after) lacked the authority to appoint Dejan Damjanović. The turmoil within Montenegrin football’s top club is hard to describe.

Now, 30 days later, the well-known Boske, a legend of Montenegrin football, is ready to speak out—expressing his frustration with the misleading narratives, media coverage, and the damage to his reputation.

In a statement, he said:

“It’s a disgrace and unjust that this is happening to Buducnost, especially during its centennial,” he initiates.

“I hold the role of sports director and have signed a two-year contract. I was aware of the club’s somewhat ambiguous situation upon joining but was filled with enthusiasm at the request of Novak Novaković. Yet, from day one, I’ve faced allegations of being illegally appointed, even though Novaković carried the club through a stellar season and made impressive transfers.”

Damjanović stresses that his motivations were solely sports-related.

“I joined to assist Buducnost—a great club—in making progress in Europe. Even had the results been poor, I would not have caused any issues regarding my contract, as I’ve achieved plenty both on the field and financially, and I want to clarify that I’m not here for financial gain or to take someone else’s position,” he asserts.

However…

“From the very start, I encountered significant resistance. Comments suggesting I’m not fit for this role began to surface. I have stayed silent for 30 days, but today I am speaking out publicly to defend my name against the smear campaigns and absurd stories circulating about me. It’s my hope that everyone fulfills their professional duties without overstepping their authority.”

Damjanović expresses his desire to work under challenging circumstances.

“I aimed for a constructive dialogue with the coach, wanting to establish a healthy relationship from the outset. Yet, he continues to act independently without consulting anyone at the club. Recently, it has come to my attention that he expressed gratitude to our captain, a club legend, who remains under contract for another year, while offering him my position as sports director. I find it hard to believe that such a situation could arise, having spent 25 years in football without witnessing something like this. I hope we can resolve these matters soon, as they only serve to hurt the club.”

Boske concludes:

“FK Buducnost deserves far more respect during this anniversary. We should focus more on our players who had an outstanding season, as well as on the young talents that have emerged.”
