Dallas Mavericks’ star Kyrie Irving has been chosen to take part in the upcoming NBA All-Star Game, stepping in for his injured teammate Anthony Davis.
Davis sustained a left hamstring injury during his Dallas debut against Houston and is projected to be out for several weeks. He was acquired by the Mavericks as part of the trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.
This marks Irving’s ninth All-Star selection in his career, and he was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the All-Star Game back in 2014.
Additionally, Atlanta point guard Trae Young will participate in the All-Star Game as a substitute for Milwaukee forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, who is sidelined due to a calf injury.
Young will be playing for Charles Barkley’s team, which will also include Serbian national player Nikola Jokić.
This will be Young’s fourth appearance in the All-Star Game, where he currently leads the NBA in assists per game.
This year’s traditional West-East matchup will be replaced with a four-team tournament format. The semi-finals are scheduled for February 16, with finals to follow on the same evening. The winning team in each match will be the one that first scores 40 points.
