Navigating Goal-Setting After a Summer of Uncertainty

This Sunday marks the official kickoff of Budućnost’s 29th consecutive episode in the Champions League, as their handball players take to the field at the “Multifunctional Hall” in Bucharest.
Throughout the past thirty years, the club from Montenegro’s capital has reached the pinnacle of European handball twice. While there have been memorable moments, there have also been heartbreaking ones. Yet, this summer has cast an unprecedented shadow over Budućnost’s future, especially following a season that felt particularly difficult.
The anticipated resurgence was abruptly halted when the main sponsor departed during the summer. Additionally, the new stars who joined Budućnost were informed that they were free to seek opportunities elsewhere.
“This has really disturbed us. I believe that aside from injuries, hearing just ten days before the season starts that the club may close and you are free to look for another team is a major blow, especially when you were anticipating a different season. It was a true shock that unsettled us all,” states Jelena Radivojević (formerly Despotović) in an interview with “News”.
In a last-minute turn, the founding rights were acquired by the capital, allowing Budućnost to continue its operations. However, it’s evident that these challenges have left a mark on the team’s preparations and objectives for the season ahead.
“Given the situation and what unfolded right before the season started, it’s tough to set expectations. We’re also placed in a group with the elite of European handball, making it even harder to predict. Nevertheless, we won’t shy away from fighting and giving our best,” Jelena asserts.
The Major Reason I Stayed
In November of the previous year, the Montenegrin national team member chose to return to the club where she became a European champion in 2015, after experiences in Debrecen, Crimea, Djer, and Ferencvaros. This summer, she faced a decision: become a free agent or remain with Budućnost. Ultimately, the choice felt straightforward.
“The beautiful experiences I’ve had made the decision clear. Over the past two years, I’ve not been in a position to think solely of myself; I have a daughter, and any parent can understand how challenging it is to pack up and leave with her in just five days,” Jelena explained. “Given that my husband is also a professional athlete (Bogdan Radivojević, Serbian national team player), it means we are not often together, making it even more difficult for me to embark on a new journey alone.”
She emphasizes the importance of a solid organization for any potential move.
“I wouldn’t consider leaving if everything wasn’t aligned for her. She comes first. When she feels secure and happy, I can focus on playing. If Budućnost were to cease operations, I would not go anywhere.”
First Opponent – Rapid and Milena
The Champions League group presents formidable opponents for Budućnost, including European champion Đer, runners-up Ludvigsburg (formerly Bittheim), final-four team Esbjerg, Odense, Vipers, Brest, and Romania’s Rapid.
Their first match is on Sunday at 4 PM against Rapid Bucharest, featuring Milena Raičević and coach Igor Markovic.
“We’re facing a strong team, and on paper, they appear to be the favorites. While we’re looking forward to competing against Milena and other national team players as the season progresses, during those 60 minutes, our focus will be on supporting our colors, while they’ll fight for theirs. Friendships can wait until after the games,” Jelena emphasized.
In the second round, Budućnost will challenge Brest at home in Podgorica, with hopes for the capital’s atmosphere to return to its former glory.
“Sadly, the atmosphere in Podgorica has not been great over the past few seasons, and I believe we all long for the old days. This city rightfully deserves to return to its former vibrancy. We are eager for our fans to join us, as we will genuinely need their support this season,” Jelena Radivojević concluded.
