Consultations Conducted with Agricultural Associations as Part of the ECOBASE Project
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management of Montenegro is actively engaged in the ECOBASE project, carried out under the Interreg IPA ADRION programme, aiming to preserve soil health and promote the sustainable use of natural resources. In this regard, field visits and discussions took place with agricultural associations in the central and northern regions, focusing on data collection, identifying challenges, and sharing experiences.
Representatives from the associations pointed out that the primary drivers of soil degradation are associated with human actions, such as converting land for construction, neglecting arable land, burning grasslands, and limited access to leasing unused land. In Pljevlja, particular attention was given to issues pertaining to old mining sites and inadequate infrastructure, while in Nikšić, the emphasis was on the necessity for a continual increase in livestock numbers, which directly affects pasture quality and management. Additionally, participants noted the need for enhanced legal enforcement, education for producers, and improved coordination within institutions.
During the discussions, project activities focused on developing tools for the exchange of soil data were unveiled, alongside information regarding the drafting of a new Law on Agricultural Land. Participants contributed concrete suggestions for enhancing the legal framework and safeguarding fertile land. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management is actively involved in international projects aimed at this cause, particularly focusing on connecting scientific and governmental institutions with agricultural producers.
