Vučević’s Resignation Reaches the Serbian Parliament

The resignation of Serbian Prime Minister Miloš Vučević has officially been submitted to the National Assembly, according to Radio Television of Serbia (RTS).

The media outlet reports that some opposition MPs shared a photo on social media of a document indicating the date of resignation as January 28th.

Vučević mentioned earlier today that a decision regarding the formation of a new government or the holding of new elections will be made within the next ten days to two weeks.

He also noted that the timing of a parliamentary session, which will confirm his resignation, is dependent on the decision regarding the Government or elections based on upcoming deadlines.

What does the Constitution say?

Article 132 of the Constitution states that the Prime Minister must submit their resignation to the President of the National Assembly and simultaneously inform the President of the Republic and the public.

According to the same article, the National Assembly must acknowledge the resignation of the Prime Minister at its first subsequent session, which will effectively terminate the Government’s mandate.

Following that, the President of the Republic is required to initiate the procedure for the election of a new Government.

If the National Assembly does not elect a new Government within 30 days from the date of the Prime Minister’s resignation, the President is obligated to dissolve the Assembly and call for elections.
