A member of the Serbian Gendarmerie, identified as A. Đ. (54), tragically passed away while diving on Friday, May 30, near the island of Mamula at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor, as reported by “Vijesti” through unofficial sources.
A. Đ., along with fifteen fellow members from the Sports and Recreational Club “Serbian Gendarmerie” based in Belgrade, was in Montenegro for their annual excursion and diving training, scheduled from May 25 to 31 in Žanjic, at the entrance to Boka.
This event is a longstanding annual practice of the Serbian Gendarmerie, conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Montenegro, the Montenegrin Police Directorate, and other relevant authorities.
This year’s diving activities took place in the Luštica region, covering the waters among Žanjic, Mirište, Cape Veslo, Cape Arza, as well as surrounding the islands of Mamula and Plava špilja. The Maritime Safety and Port Management Administration of Montenegro promptly issued a radio alert for seafarers, advising all vessels in the area to navigate with caution and be mindful of divers and underwater activities, which were clearly marked by the presence of diving vessels and surface buoys.
The circumstances of A. Đ.’s death remain unclear; however, it has been confirmed that his passing was not due to contact with any vessel. Unofficial reports suggest that he experienced a medical emergency at a slightly greater depth.
The body of the Serbian national, retrieved from the sea by his colleagues, has been sent for an autopsy to the pathology department at the Clinical Center in Podgorica. The Montenegrin Police Directorate is conducting an on-site investigation, while the Higher State Prosecutor’s Office in Podgorica is leading the inquiry into the events surrounding the Serbian gendarme’s death.
