The digital transformation of the tourism sector is a key focus for its ongoing development and enhancement, according to Minister of Tourism, Simonida Kordić. She underscored the significance of maintaining collaboration with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and other global entities.

Kordić believes this partnership will greatly aid in fulfilling the Ministry’s strategic objectives while promoting sustainable tourism development through digital innovation and regional connections.

During the meeting, Kordić engaged with Tim Lardner, UNOPS Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia, and Mihela Telatin, UNOPS Representative for Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and North Macedonia.

“The meeting’s primary focus was on the digitalization of the tourism sector, highlighting regional networking and the diversification of offerings, particularly by boosting rural and active tourism,” the Ministry reported.

The Ministry, in collaboration with UNOPS, also presented an analysis of current digital tools in tourism, identifying critical challenges such as administrative hurdles, legal restrictions, and a limited degree of digital integration.

“The discussion highlighted the necessity for enhanced inter-institutional collaboration, tackling the shadow economy, reducing administrative burdens, and improving real-time data sharing,” the statement continued.

The findings further indicated the need to streamline the accommodation registration process and establish a unified tourism information system, which would support legal businesses and enhance the quality of tourism services.

From these results, they plan to create a centralized system for recording and sharing data to ease the operational processes for all tourism stakeholders while fostering transparency and efficiency within the sector.
