Vesuvius Erupts, Napoli Claims Victory

Just like in the days of Diego Maradona, Napoli has claimed the title of Italian champions once again, marking their second victory in three years and their fourth in total.

The club’s earlier titles during the Maradona era were separated by four seasons—history seems to have cycled back as the team celebrated at the “Diego Armando Maradona” stadium, which felt too small to contain all the joy and excitement.

Nearly 60,000 blissful fans packed the stadium, while over 100,000 more flooded the streets and the central square, embracing the football explosion that is Vesuvius.

Antonio Conte’s squad triumphed over Cagliari with a 2-0 win on home turf, edging out Inter in a nail-biting finish—Inter fell just a point short, despite their own 2-0 away victory against Como.

With the skillful guidance of a master coach known for his title-winning expertise—this marks Conte’s fifth Serie A title with a third different club—he has led the Neapolitans to glory.

It wasn’t just the coach; the championship journey featured strong performances from key players on the field, and the final match served as a fitting tribute to these central figures.

Scott McTominay, the Scottish midfielder who surprised many by landing in Italy (with British players being a rarity in Serie A, and Scots even more so), netted an astonishing 12th goal of the season, many of which were pivotal.

Only one player has provided more contributions in a Napoli jersey this season: Romelu Lukaku, who scored the second goal with a total of 14 goals and an impressive 10 assists, the highest in the league.

Not participating in European competitions this season significantly aided Napoli, particularly when compared to Inter in the latter part of the season. Ultimately, the championship title is fully deserved.

This achievement wasn’t borne from just a handful of matches—it took place over the course of 38 rounds.

The departure of Hvičo Kvarachelija, the team’s star player, midway through the season was hardly felt.

Meanwhile, Inter’s victory over Como ended with a score of 2-0, driven by goals from De Vrij in the 20th minute and Correa in the 51st minute.

This win proved rather inconsequential, as coach Simone Inzaghi seemed unconfident about Cagliari—he deployed a mixed lineup, conserving his best for the upcoming Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain.

At the end of the day, Inter’s season-round achievement may shine in Munich, but tonight belongs to Napoli.

No place celebrates titles quite like the south, in the city nestled at the foot of Vesuvius.
