Ivanović Meets with President and Joint Committee on European Union Members
During his official visit to the Kingdom of Spain, Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Filip Ivanović met with the President and members of the Joint Committee for the European Union.
Deputy Prime Minister Ivanović highlighted that his visit to Madrid is intended to reaffirm Spain’s robust support for Montenegro’s European aspirations, while also enhancing bilateral relations, especially in the fields of economy, tourism, education, and infrastructure. He underscored the significant role of parliamentary dialogue and diplomacy in advancing reform initiatives and facilitating Montenegro’s approach towards EU membership.
In this vein, he updated the attendees on the progress made in the accession negotiations, the reforms implemented, and the roadmap for the upcoming period. “We possess a clear vision for our objectives, and the political backing of EU member states is crucial for our journey,” Ivanović stated. He expressed appreciation to Spain for its unwavering support thus far and expressed his hope that this assistance would persist—and even grow—throughout the remaining accession journey.
During the dialogue, members of the Committee reaffirmed Spain’s unwavering dedication to supporting Montenegro in its European ambitions. A representative from the Vox party commended Montenegro’s advancements, calling it an “exceptional country,” while a member of the People’s Party noted that its future EU membership would add significant value to the entire European Union.
Participants shared perspectives on the broader enlargement process, recognizing Montenegro as the most advanced candidate currently seeking accession.
Ivanović emphasized the constructive collaboration with the new European Commission, particularly highlighting the positive and open dialogue with Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both parties expressed their readiness to enhance future cooperation, specifically through increased exchanges between the legislative bodies of Spain and Montenegro, focusing on sharing best practices in EU integration and aligning national legislation with European standards.
