Railways serve not just as a means of connection but also as a vital strategic asset that enables countries to convert challenges into fresh development prospects, stated Montenegro’s Minister of Transport, Maja Vukićević.

The Ministry of Transport revealed that Vukićević took part in a panel focused on enhancing supply chain resilience via the modernization of rail transport during the international forum on transport corridors held in Istanbul.

According to the statement, Vukićević emphasized the importance of railways as a fundamental component of a resilient and sustainable transport system, especially amid current geopolitical challenges and disruptions in global supply chains.

“Railways are not merely a connection tool; they are a strategic asset that can transform challenges into development opportunities. Hence, Montenegro is vigorously investing in modernizing its railway infrastructure, enhancing safety and interoperability, and expanding the network to fortify east-west connectivity along the established north-south route,” Vukićević noted.

The Ministry of Transport mentioned that Vukićević specifically highlighted the significance of new legislation in her address, pointing out that the two foundational reform pillars will be the Railway Law and the Law on Safety and Interoperability in Railway Transport.

“This establishes the basis for Montenegro’s full integration into the European transport network and bolsters its role as a logistics hub in the region,” Vukićević stated.

During the discussion, she asserted that resilience encompasses not just infrastructure but also human resources, encouraging collaboration between the public and private sectors and the adoption of digital solutions.

“She notably stressed the necessity for the EU to involve candidate countries in the processes of harmonization and the adoption of common transport policies,” the statement mentioned.

The Ministry of Transport added that Montenegro’s participation in this panel reaffirms its commitment to European integration and the development of a modern, safe, and sustainable transport system, which will underpin both economic growth and regional stability.
