David Mirković represents the promising future of Montenegrin basketball. The SC Derbija player was part of the Montenegrin squad during the recent qualification “window” for the European Championship, where he made his debut for the senior team in Stockholm against Sweden.
On Sunday, Montenegro secured its fifth EuroBasket qualification in Sweden, marking the third time in its history. The 19-year-old native of Nikšić celebrated his birthday in January and made his entrance in the 27th minute of the match.
“It was an incredible feeling. I was honored to be part of our national team roster against Germany, and now debuting is just an immense source of pride,” David Mirković shared with the KSCG website.
Mirković is expected to have a shining career ahead. He has been involved in Euroleague tournaments, participated in FIBA and NBA camps, and his appearance in the national team jersey solidifies that he has a promising future.
“It’s a significant honor to represent our senior national team and to share the court with such experienced players. I appreciate all the incredible support and the coaching staff’s trust,” Mirković added.
The Nikšić-born athlete got his opportunity during the last cycle when championship contenders were determined.
“When the February cycle call came, I understood the importance of the two key matches ahead of us. We faced high stakes in Sweden, but there was no nervousness; instead, I felt a strong desire to earn the trust placed in me and contribute as best as I could,” Mirković emphasized.
This marks Montenegro’s fifth appearance at Eurobasket.
“The ongoing participation in major competitions is a tremendous achievement for Montenegrin basketball. This continuity is vital. Now, we focus on club commitments, but we all eagerly anticipate the summer, for there is a unique motivation whenever we play for the national team,” Mirković concluded.
