We may be exhausted, but we know it’s worth it.
The top Montenegrin volleyball players have a hectic and demanding schedule ahead of them, with promising prospects for an unforgettable summer in Europe.
They are kicking off their journey in the Golden League, marked by a crucial victory to maintain their elite status and the emergence of young talents on the grand stage—setting the scene for the highlight of their busy calendar: the final round of the European Championship qualifiers.
Nineteen-year-old Ksenija Krunić, a standout player for Budućnost Volley and one of the bright spots in June’s Golden League, isn’t slowing down. In her libero role during the domestic championship, she took on a significant workload and enjoyed ample playing time in all six high-stakes matches with Jovo Caković’s team.
Ksenija utilizes the short summer break to train individually, embracing the challenge of what lies ahead.
“It’s a tremendous challenge. Following the Golden League, rest is minimal as preparation for the European Championship qualifiers is about to begin. Sure, there’s fatigue at times, but we know it’s all worth it. We’re focused and ready to give our all at every moment, both on and off the court,” Ksenija reflects.
A win against Azerbaijan, alongside defeats to Spain, Ukraine, Slovakia, Hungary, and Portugal, has been part of their growth and learning journey.
“One win may not seem monumental on paper, but considering we faced teams that have boasted longstanding success in this competition and competed with a fresh roster, that victory—and our survival in the league—holds significant value. Naturally, we always strive for more, and our experiences in the Golden League have elevated our skills and cohesion,” Ksenija explains.
The contrast in performance from previous encounters was apparent.
“Against such formidable opponents, maintaining focus is essential; there’s no room for complacency. It’s against them that we truly evolve as a team.”
Each training session tells its own story…
“Working with a coach like Jovo Caković is an enriching experience. His commitment to each session demands peak concentration and effort, and through his guidance, we make daily progress, both individually and collectively,” she shares.
Ksenija also appreciates the entire coaching staff as a strong source of support.
“From the assistant coaches to the fitness experts and physiotherapists, I want to particularly recognize assistant coach Tijana Avramović (Malešević). Her experience, energy, and unwavering support mean a great deal to us players. The entire professional team truly works as one cohesive unit, and we’re fortunate to have such backing.”
This was Ksenija’s first experience logging significant minutes at such a competitive level, but she was not alone in that endeavor.
“The veteran players provide immense support, both on and off the court. They know how to guide us through tough moments and keep us motivated. Each day, I learn from them—not just about the game but about professionalism, approach, and conduct in training and matches.”
The culmination of summer awaits with the final qualifying rounds and the potential for Montenegro to secure a first-ever spot in the European Championship.
“We’ll give our all. I genuinely believe we’re on the brink of qualifying for the European Championship, and the return of experienced players who missed previous competitions will bolster our confidence. Every athlete dreams of representing their nation in a major event. For me, qualifying would be a tremendous motivation for continued growth,” Ksenija declares.
This summer with the national team follows an unforgettable season with Budućnost.
“The club season was incredibly special for me. Reaching the final and defeating Luka Bar reflects our progression and determination as a team. I take pride in everything we’ve accomplished, yet we recognize there’s more to be done, with challenges and opportunities ahead in international competitions next season.”
Ksenija’s role as a libero aligns with her passion, a position introduced by the World Volleyball Federation prior to the 2000 Sydney Olympics, aimed at enhancing defenses and prolonging rallies.
Born on August 15, 2005, her volleyball journey has been quite remarkable.
“I’ve embraced the libero position since childhood; it’s the only role I’ve genuinely connected with from the start. With each passing day and training session, my love for this position grows, and I’m dedicated to improving in all aspects,” she shares.
She began her journey at the Academy before transitioning to Budućnost last year.
“At the Academy, I learned valuable lessons from coach Milan Marković, who played an instrumental role in my volleyball foundation. Moving to Budućnost has allowed me to further enhance my skills. I am committed to reaching new heights and aspire to play internationally in the future.”
The former Academy player is also making strides academically…
“Alongside volleyball, I am pursuing studies at the Faculty of Law in Podgorica. This not only develops my work ethic but also sharpens my discipline and organizational skills.”
