Five years back, she donned the red jersey for the first time; her talent was evident from the start, and she has since become a pivotal player in Montenegro’s handball scene. Now, it’s her turn to lead the “lions”.
Matea Pletikosić and the national team are embarking on a new chapter in Fafe, northern Portugal, where they’ll face the host team in the playoff match for World Cup qualification on Wednesday (8 PM).
With the departures of Milena Raičević and Itana Grbić from the “lionesses”, Matea is set to assume the role of the primary center back under coach Suzana Lazović.
“I believe the greatest responsibility falls on me now. As a center back, I must step up and lead the team in crucial moments,” Matea shared ahead of their journey to Portugal.
This responsibility isn’t new to her.
“I’ve reached an age where I must embrace this role. With my experience in clubs over the last few seasons, I’ve adapted to being the primary center back, and I need to replicate that for the national team,” stated the Sinj native.
The Montenegrin women’s handball team is poised for a new challenge, aiming for their 19th major competition since regaining independence against Portugal.
“We all need to be fully focused and prepared, because Portugal is not an easy opponent,” stressed Matea.
While Portugal may not be elite, having only recently made its second-ever appearance at the European Championships, complacency is not an option.
“We’ve never competed against them before, and they are somewhat of an unknown, but I recognize their progression. Every team plays handball these days. While we are the favorites, it doesn’t guarantee victory, and we must fight until the end.”
With Milena Raičević and Marina Rajčić retiring, and Itana Grbić taking a break, along with injuries to Nina Bulatović and Tanja Ivanović, new talent is emerging.
“There are numerous fresh faces, and while many experienced players have departed, the new energy from those making their debuts in important matches is crucial. We need to demonstrate that we can succeed, but it requires fight, character, and energy,” concluded Matea.
Following the match in Fafe, the return leg will take place at “Bemax Arena” on Saturday. The aggregate winner will qualify for the Handball World Cup in Germany and the Netherlands this November and December.
