We’re the Favorites, But We Must Prove It

A new chapter for Montenegrin handball players begins in Fafe, a city located in northern Portugal.

The “Lions” will face the home team in their first World Cup playoff match tonight at 20:00. With key players like Milena Raičević, Marina Rajčić, and Itana Grbić absent, new talents must step up to the plate.

One of those emerging talents is Marija Božović, a center back for the Czech club Kinžvart, who will make her national team debut at the age of 24.

“It’s a dream come true for every athlete to represent their country. I am thrilled and honored to be part of this team, and I will strive to meet the expectations set by the coaching staff,” said Marija.

Although Montenegro is favored against Portugal, coach Suzana Lazović has emphasized that there can be no room for complacency.

“Portugal is a formidable team, even if their past results haven’t been outstanding. We may be the favorites, but we need to prove that on the field,” Marija asserts.

It is clear that the strongest asset for the “Lionesses” will be their defense.

“The Montenegrin national team’s defense has always been its greatest strength, and we will focus on that. We had ample time to analyze our opponent, devise a game plan, and we are fully prepared to showcase it in the opening match.”

Marija is one of the few handball players to earn a national team jersey without having previously played for Montenegro’s top club, Budućnost.

“I have spent the last six years abroad, starting with two years in France before moving to the Czech Republic. It’s challenging not being part of Budućnost, as their supporters often overlook what happens overseas. However, hard work always pays off,” concluded Marija Božović.

The return match in Podgorica is set for Saturday at 18:00 at the “Bemax Arena.” If the “Lionesses” remain flawless in this two-legged tie against Portugal, they will qualify for a major competition for the 19th time.

The World Cup will take place in Germany and the Netherlands in November and December.
