Avonji Emerges from Induced Coma as Nottingham Launches Investigation
Nottingham Forest player Taiwo Awoniyi has emerged from an induced coma following surgery for a severe stomach injury, according to reports from British media outlets.
Awoniyi was rushed to the hospital after colliding with the goal post in the dying moments of Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Leicester. The BBC indicates that the Nigerian athlete suffered a ruptured intestine.
The initial phase of surgery took place on Monday, and he was placed in an induced coma on Tuesday for doctors to closely monitor his recovery. The second surgery, which involved closing the wound, was executed on Wednesday, after which Awoniyi was awakened from the coma that same evening.
The Nottingham club has initiated an internal review regarding the management of the player’s injury.
Awoniyi received substantial medical attention on the field following the incident but expressed a desire to continue playing. However, it quickly became apparent that he was unwell, yet he remained on the field as coach Nuno Espirito Santo had exhausted all substitution options.
