The ongoing battle against corruption, fortifying institutions, and advancing European reforms are essential commitments for Montenegro to emerge as a strong, equitable European nation for all its residents, stated President Jakov Milatović.
In his speech commemorating May 21st – Independence Day and the two-year mark of his presidency, Milatović reflected that he had pledged two years ago to diligently work towards improving Montenegro and stand as a staunch defender of its constitutional and legal frameworks.
“As I reflect on my two years in office, I don’t measure success by meetings, protocols, or speeches, but by the moments we’ve rebuilt trust in our state. Montenegro is now on a path towards Europe and closer than ever to full EU membership,” Milatović proclaimed.
He highlighted that during the past two years, they have restored credibility with international partners and fostered amicable relations with neighboring countries.
“During discussions with leaders from Europe and across the globe, we conveyed a clear message: Montenegro knows its identity, its direction, and its allies. We remain a dependable partner for our allies, steadfastly dedicated to peace, stability, and shared values,” Milatović added.
He underscored his presence where the voices of the people hold significance – in cities, villages, schools, among both the youth and the elderly.
“I have listened to your concerns and your vision for Montenegro. We have created an environment for everyone’s opinion to be heard – including the academic and professional sectors, as well as civil society. I have engaged in open dialogues and considered varying viewpoints. Politics should not be limited to institutions; it must thrive among the populace,” stated Milatović.
He emphasized his intent to be a corrective influence, steering social processes towards increased democratization. “Where there were divisions, we chose dialogue. I have always believed, as I do now, that democracy is built through actions, not merely words.”
Milatović expressed his faith in unity that respects differences rather than demanding sameness.
“Some injustices have gone unaddressed for far too long. I have sought to acknowledge and rectify them. Justice remains incomplete until it is all-encompassing,” he remarked.
He asserted that the commitment to combat corruption, strengthen institutions, and pursue European reforms is a continuous obligation to ensure Montenegro is robust, European, and fair to all its inhabitants.
Milatović voiced that the Montenegro we aspire to build should be a nation where effort, knowledge, and integrity are the guiding principles.
“We are resolutely steering Montenegro towards its rightful place as a developed, democratic, European nation. The challenges ahead are significant, but I am confident: if we persist together, we will prevail. For the Montenegro we all share,” concluded Milatović.
