After four seasons abroad, Montenegrin national team player Itana Grbić is officially back with her beloved club – Buducnost.
Playing as a center back, Itana has returned to don the blue and white jersey following stints at three Champions League clubs: Ferencvaros, Brest, and Crimea.
After the team’s elimination by Rapid in this season’s Champions League, it was clear that Itana was heading back to Podgorica. The club announced that she would be their key reinforcement for the upcoming season.
“My time at several prestigious European clubs has been invaluable for my development, but Buducnost has always held a special place in my heart. This is my city, my club, and I felt it was the right moment to return and support the team,” Itana shared on the club’s website, adding:
“I am coming back with more experience and maturity, eager for Buducnost to reclaim its position among the elite of European handball.”
Itana first wore the Buducnost jersey from 2016 to 2019, returning for the 2020/21 season.
“Playing in front of the home crowd means a lot to me. ‘Morača’ has a unique energy, and I hope we can bring the fans back to the stadium,” she highlighted.
In recent years, fans seem to have lost touch with the club that brought two European titles to Podgorica.
“I believe that together we can restore ‘Morača’ to its former glory, making it an unassailable fortress once again.”
What are the expectations for next season and the team being built?
“My goal is to help establish a stable team capable of competing with the best. I believe more Montenegrin national team players will come to Buducnost, as this is a pathway for both the club and the national team to develop together. With the right vision, capable individuals, and support from the fans, we can be competitive in the Champions League.”
Itana also conveyed a message to the fans.
“Thank you to everyone who has continuously supported me, regardless of where I played. Now is the time to create new chapters in the club’s history together. The future transcends being just a club—it’s about belonging and pride. See you in Morača,” concluded Itana Grbić.
