Montenegro Takes Third Place but Will Not Compete in Katowice, Not Even Against Slovenia
Montenegrin basketball players are set to await their opponents for their participation in the fifth EuroBasket since regaining independence, entering as the third seed.
The draw for the European Championship is set for March 27th. Notably, Bojan Dubljević and his teammates will not be placed in the group competing in Katowice, nor can their opponent be Slovenia.
Why? Poland is also in the third pot, and as a host nation, they had the opportunity to choose one opponent—ultimately selecting the “dragons,” potentially led by Luka Dončić.
Boško Radović’s team will compete in one of the other three host cities: Riga, Tampere, or Limassol. Latvia has selected Estonia, Finland has chosen Lithuania, and Cyprus is, as anticipated, facing Greece.
The third pot in the draw also includes Italy and the Czech Republic, in addition to Montenegro and Poland.
The first pot is comprised of Serbia, Germany, France, and Spain; the second consists of Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia, and Greece; the fourth includes Finland, Georgia, Turkey, and Israel; the fifth contains Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belgium, Estonia, and Great Britain; and the sixth features Sweden, Iceland, Portugal, and Cyprus.
EuroBasket will consist of four groups, each containing six teams, with the top four from each advancing to the round of 16.
