Enhancing access roads at the border crossings (BCs) between Montenegro and Croatia is a mutual interest, aimed at improving traffic flow and alleviating congestion, particularly in summer.
This was a key takeaway from the working meeting involving the directors of Monteput and the Traffic Administration, Milan Ljiljanić and Radomir Vuksanović, alongside their Croatian counterparts, held in the Municipality of Konavle.
The Traffic Administration announced that both nations plan to issue tenders for technical documentation aimed at expanding access roads by year-end, laying the groundwork for future construction efforts.
Prior to the meeting, a visit to the Karasovići border checkpoint was conducted, initiated by Croatian Roads.
The participants noted the need for a collaborative approach to enhance infrastructure that impacts the efficiency of cross-border traffic between the two nations.
The Traffic Administration further shared that discussions also included aligning plans for future highways and expressways linking Montenegro and Croatia.
“These initiatives involve cooperation in project documentation development and upcoming tenders for new road construction,” the statement emphasized.
Ljiljanić remarked that the Spatial Plan of Montenegro facilitates focused efforts on the development of highways and expressways, particularly emphasizing the preservation of the Bay of Kotor area.
Ivica Budimir, President of the Croatian Roads Administration, stressed the importance of coordinating the construction plans for road infrastructure, preparing project documents, and establishing timelines for critical segments. Vuksanović noted that Montenegro is experiencing heightened traffic intensity, making the enhancement of road infrastructure a priority.
“Our aim is to establish a safe and modern transport network. Alongside constructing new roads, we are also prioritizing the reconstruction of existing ones,” Vuksanović stated.
He added that collaboration with Croatia on these initiatives holds significant regional importance.
The Transport Administration concluded that there is a strong willingness to maintain cooperation, as institutions from both countries will continue working towards bolstering the infrastructure connecting Montenegro and Croatia, as well as the wider region.
