“Life is a Miracle: Jokić’s Chess Moves and My Struggle to Give Young Players a Chance”

The greatest coach in European basketball history continues his dialogue with Slaven Bilić, imparting significant insights for young athletes and their families.

In the second segment of the show (Un)success of the Champion, the legendary Željko Obradović discussed topics including Nikola Jokić, Luka Dončić’s move to the Lakers, the advice he offers his former players, and his thoughts on the impact of social media on younger generations.

“Social media is remarkable. Personally, I’m not interested in it. I never even read the comments to avoid external influence,” stated Obradović.

He also touched on Nikola Jokić, whom he described as “the fastest player in the world with his mind.”

“He makes all the decisions, perceives everything before anyone else. He plays chess, the man is like a computer, it’s incredible what he accomplishes. It’s astonishing! What basketball intelligence he possesses!”

Obradović also commented on the recent developments regarding Luka Dončić and the NBA’s evolving landscape.

“Everyone there, who understands the situation better than I do, has been taken aback. It’s been demonstrated again; all players echoed that it’s a business, devoid of sentimentality or love. If someone had suggested this change five days prior, they would likely have been considered insane… Yet, here it is. The interests, the reasoning, the evaluations—only time will tell if that Dallas manager was right or wrong. Nonetheless, new players in Dallas will certainly seize opportunities, and Luka will have a chance to showcase his immense talent with the Lakers… But once again, business comes first, which is why the NBA is the premier league—they meticulously manage even the smallest details,” Obradović underscored.

Obradović conveyed straightforward messages to the youth and their guardians.

“For a young player, the key is to play. I understand the agony I endure as a coach and as a person when I can’t offer all players game time. It happens… However, I lament when I’m faced with the fact that I didn’t give everyone an opportunity. Therefore, I think about the next game, and I’ll ensure you get a chance. Be prepared. Particularly for a young athlete. I always advise young players—if you’re not getting playing time, consider moving to another league or club where you can play. That is the most crucial point. Advice for parents—allow your children to grow. Children are incredibly astute and shouldn’t be used to resolve your personal issues.”

He recounted his moments of uncertainty and pivotal changes in his career. He narrated a season when he seriously contemplated departing, as he felt he had lost his influence over the players. Yet, it was the players who encouraged him to remain, accepting personal responsibility for the needed changes.

“We convened for a meeting, improved, and had an extraordinary season.”

He also shared his recommendations for players transitioning out of sports.

“Pursue what you love. If you’re lost and unsure, it’s the worst feeling. Explore other options. Life is a miracle, and you can discover where you belong. Dedication is vital… I’ve received propositions for other roles, but I’ve always conveyed that coaching is my sole passion. That’s where my heart lies. I can’t envision myself as a club president, sports director, or in any other position—coaching is my only calling.”
