Montenegro expresses its support for the initiatives put forth by Ukraine, the European Union (EU), and the United States of America (USA) to forge a temporary ceasefire and initiate a peace process grounded in robust security guarantees.

This statement was issued today by the Public Relations Office of the President of Montenegro, following a meeting between the President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović, and the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.

The announcement detailed that Milatović held discussions with Zelensky during the European Political Community Summit in Tirana, covering bilateral relations and current events in the global political arena.

“President Milatović noted that Montenegro is the first nation outside the EU to implement a decision on temporary protection for displaced persons from Ukraine, having approved over 10,000 residency applications. This positions it among the countries with the highest number of Ukrainians granted temporary protection relative to their population size. The commencement of Ukraine’s EU accession negotiations last year was also welcomed, confirming Montenegro’s role as the most advanced candidate and future EU member, committed to supporting Ukraine’s European aspirations,” the statement claimed.

The Public Relations Office of the President of Montenegro conveyed that Milatović and Zelensky shared perspectives on current diplomatic initiatives aimed at establishing lasting peace in Ukraine.

“In this context, Montenegro supports the initiatives from Ukraine, the EU, and the US to implement a temporary ceasefire and kick-start a peace process based on firm security guarantees,” the announcement stated.

Milatović reaffirmed his commitment to Ukraine in its pursuit of a fair and enduring peace.

“In conclusion, both parties underscored their willingness to maintain political dialogue in areas of mutual interest—guided by solidarity, partnership, and shared European values. President Milatović expressed optimism about an official visit from President Zelensky to Montenegro in the near future,” the Public Relations Office of the President of Montenegro added.
