The champion title has been settled for some time now, with clear knowledge of which team will be relegated to the Championship. Thus, the most captivating aspect of the Premier League until season’s end will be the race for Champions League qualification.
Newcastle took a significant step towards rejoining the elite today, securing a 2:0 victory over Chelsea in the 36th round.
With this win, Newcastle climbed to third place, while Chelsea dropped to fifth, the last spot qualifying for the top flight. However, the London side is tied on points with Aston Villa, and Nottingham Forest trails by two points but has a match in hand.
Newcastle opened the scoring in the second minute—after winning the ball, Murphy directed a shot into the box, and Tonali netted it.
Chelsea faced a setback in the 36th minute when Jackson was shown a red card.
Newcastle could have sealed the game much earlier; Guimaraes squandered a prime opportunity in the 71st minute, while Chelsea had a chance as well, but James failed to find the target.
In the 90th minute, Guimaraes scored the final goal from the edge of the penalty area.
