Onidi: Montenegro as a Trusted Partner and Key Player in Regional Security

Montenegro has reaffirmed its role as a dependable partner of the European Union (EU) and a significant contributor to regional security, as highlighted during a meeting between Minister of Interior Danilo Šaranović and Olivier Onidi, the Deputy Director General of the Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs of the European Commission (DG HOME).

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP), Šaranović stressed the department’s commitment to addressing irregular migration by enhancing the Border Police’s capabilities and fostering robust operational collaboration with European allies.

The Ministry also pointed out the critical establishment of a 24/7 Operations Center in Podgorica, a pioneering initiative in the Western Balkans that facilitates real-time coordination and exchange of operational information.

“Through our partnerships with Europol and Frontex, alongside engagement in joint operations, Montenegro demonstrates its preparedness to tackle contemporary security challenges,” the statement read.

Moreover, it was noted that specialized training for police officers and the deployment of advanced equipment significantly enhance the effectiveness of efforts to curb illegal border crossings and smuggling. This also bolsters the autonomy of the Border Police in conducting criminal investigations.

Šaranović expressed gratitude to DG HOME for initiating preparations for Montenegro’s eventual accession to the Schengen area.

He conveyed confidence that Montenegro will swiftly meet its remaining obligations concerning police cooperation, border management, and visa policy alignment.

The Ministry reported that Onidi, who was visiting Montenegro for two days, commended the tangible results Montenegro has achieved in cementing its status as a strategic partner of the EU.

He acknowledged the advancements in building capacities to combat cross-border crime and manage migration effectively, while also encouraging persistent efforts against organized crime and corruption.

Onidi outlined the subsequent steps aimed at further aligning with the list of third countries requiring visas to enter the EU.

The participants agreed that cooperation between Montenegrin institutions is grounded in trust and an unbiased approach, which is essential for realizing visible outcomes.

The Ministry emphasized the significance of maintaining such a steadfast approach for Montenegro’s European future, underscoring that the rule of law takes precedence over individual interests.

“During Onidi’s visit, the delegation he led, which included representatives from FRONTEX, the EU Asylum Agency, EUROPOL, the EC (DG HOME and DG ENEST), as well as officials from the Ministries of Interior of Austria and Slovenia, engaged in productive discussions with the Police Directorate of Montenegro,” the Ministry noted.

Discussions included identifying further steps under the EC Action Plan for enhancing cooperation with Western Balkan countries to tackle irregular migration, with a spotlight on strengthening border management along migration routes, improving asylum and reception capacities, and combating migrant smuggling and human trafficking.

“Additionally, there will be closer collaboration regarding the readmission and return of migrants and the alignment of visa policies with EU standards,” the statement concluded.
