Danish Presidency of the EU Council to Prioritize Enlargement Agenda
On the second day of his trip to Denmark, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ervin Ibrahimović held a meeting with Chair of the European Committee Affairs of the Kingdom of Denmark Brigitte Klintskov Jerkel.
The discussion centered around the dynamics of European integration in light of Denmark’s upcoming presidency of the EU Council during the latter half of the year. Minister Ibrahimović reiterated our country’s commitment to fulfill all necessary criteria in the coming months, aiming to prepare Montenegro for EU membership by 2028.
“Montenegro’s accession to the EU is not only a positive development for our nation, but also for the entire region, as it would convey the message that the enlargement policy is active and more crucial than ever,” he remarked, highlighting that the European perspective for the Western Balkans is both a strategic ambition and a natural outcome of a united vision for a more stable and resilient Europe.
We value Denmark’s ongoing support for the EU enlargement policy and believe that the forthcoming presidency will offer a further opportunity for a stronger momentum in the negotiation process, DPM Ibrahimović emphasized.
Chair of the European Committee Affairs of the Kingdom of Denmark Brigitte Klintskov Jerkel underscored the significance of maintaining and reinforcing regional stability and collective European security. Discussing the themes that will feature prominently during Denmark’s presidency of the EU Council, she noted that the enlargement policy will also be part of the agenda.
Denmark is fully supportive of your aspirations towards EU membership, and we will persist in advocating for enlargement based on merit and results, Ms. Jerkel affirmed.
The two leaders also explored opportunities to strengthen bilateral relations, agreeing that tourism, the economy, and environmental protection offer exceptional potential for deepened collaboration, particularly with the recent opening of the Embassy of Montenegro in Copenhagen.
They also deliberated on shared goals and initiatives within NATO in response to increasing security challenges on the geopolitical landscape.
