This season marks a historic achievement for Fuhse Berlin, as they clinched the German championship for the first time. However, in the Champions League final, they faced a formidable opponent in their Bundesliga rivals, leaving them with little chance.

Once again, Magdeburg has emerged as the European champion, triumphing with a 32:26 (16:12) victory in Cologne, an event referred to by the Germans as the “traum-final,” or dream final.

This victory marks the fifth time the European giant has conquered the continent, showcasing its unique connection to the Champions League, despite being German champion only three times.

This victory served as sweet revenge for Bennett Wigert’s team, given that Fuhse had snatched the Bundesliga title from them by a single point, with Magdeburg unable to win any of their three matchups this season against the new German champions.

However, the European stage is a different ball game. Following victories in 1978, 1981, 2002, and now 2023, Magdeburg climbs back to the pinnacle of the continent.

Fuhse has been prolific in scoring this season, but in the first half, they were held to just 12 goals by Magdeburg’s defense.

The “Green-Reds” surged in the first 30 minutes, driven by the remarkable performances of Icelandic players Gisli Kristjansson and Omar Ingi Magnusson, finishing with a four-goal lead at the break.

Magdeburg maintained its dominance in the second half as Kristjansson continued to excel and Felix Klar contributed as well. Whenever the Berlin team posed a threat, the outstanding goalkeeper Sergej Hernandez was there to thwart their efforts.

Throughout the match, Magdeburg upheld a five-goal advantage, ultimately stretching it to a maximum of six (32:26) in the final moments, clearly signaling that Fuhse could not stage a comeback.

Kristjansson ended the match with eight goals, while Klar and Magnusson notched six each, and Hernandez made 18 crucial saves.

For Fuhse, Matijas Gidsel and Hakun Vest Av Teigum stood out.
