Despite narrowly missing out on a point against Hungary and Iceland—despite being close to securing draws in both matches—the Montenegrin handball team managed to achieve at least one favorable outcome in Group C of the European Championship.
Specifically, Hungary’s victory over Serbia, 28:27, allowed them to progress to the main stage and paved the way for the “lions” to compete against the “eagles” on Tuesday for third place in the group.
A win for Vlad Šola’s team would secure a position in the top tier for the World Championship playoffs, giving them a more manageable opponent in the race for the championship hosted by Norway, Denmark, and Croatia.
Conversely, a draw or loss would place Montenegro among the underdogs, complicating their chances of making a third appearance at the world championships.
However, Serbia also has its own equations to consider—they need a win and a Hungary victory against Iceland to progress to the main stage.
In tonight’s match, Bence Banhidi netted nine goals, while Vukašin Vorkapić and Nemanja Ilić led Toni Đeron’s squad with five goals each.
The match wasn’t as gripping as the final score suggests, as Ceme Rodriguez’s team took control midway through the second half, leading 25:20 by the 52nd minute.
The silver lining for Serbia is that they narrowed the margin significantly, which could be crucial if they defeat Montenegro and Iceland loses to Hungary…
In Group A, Switzerland managed to hold France to a surprising draw (26:26), while Germany delivered a strong performance against North Macedonia, winning 34:25.
In Group B, Croatia drew with Austria (28:28), while Spain secured a 12-point victory against Romania (36:24).
This setback is unlikely to cost Croatia much, as they should still secure two points in the main stage if Spain wins against Austria…
