Fiasco, debacle, and an embarrassing conclusion… These are the headlines dominating Serbian media following their national team’s defeat tonight against Montenegro.
In a thrilling finale, our handball players triumphed over Serbia in the final round of the European Championship with a score of 30:29, capped by Nemanja Grbović’s last-second goal.
“Things must be called by their true name – a fiasco,” stated Belgrade’s “Mozzartsport”.
The same outlet also criticized the Serbian diaspora in Germany, noting the significant presence of Montenegrin fans.
“Many more Montenegrins were present today, proudly wearing their colors, with red and yellow jerseys dominating the hall in Munich. They were incredibly vocal, with support from fans who traveled from Podgorica and other Montenegrin cities just for this match, despite having no chance to advance after two defeats against Hungary and Iceland.”
The newspaper “Danas” featured an intriguing headline.
“Always trailing Montenegro, but never surpassing it.”
“Sport klub” reported: “Debacle! Serbia is out of the European Championship after falling to Montenegro.”
“Goodbye Europe, Serbia succumbed to the Montenegrins,” declared “Sportski Journal”.
“Sportal.rs” was particularly graphic in its description.
“Poor Serbia exited the EP early, as Montenegrins humiliated us with zeppelins; we might as well take the same plane back from Munich.”
“B92” referred to Serbia’s defeat as “an inglorious end to the European Championship.”
The match held in Munich was also followed closely in Croatia, which is a country passionate about handball, especially due to the presence of their coach.
“Sola’s Montenegrins have eliminated Serbia from the European Parliament,” reported “Index.hr”.
“Vecernji list” echoed this sentiment.
“Schola dashed Serbia’s hopes for advancing, while Montenegrins bade farewell to the Euros with a victory.”
