“Against Đero: The Importance of a Compelling Motive”

The players of Budućnost Bemax must find their motivation for the match against Đer, despite being unable to reach the round of 16 in the Champions League.

Budućnost will face Đer in the 11th round of the Champions League on Saturday.

The Hungarian side, a five-time European champion, has performed exceptionally, securing 20 points from ten matches.

After their defeat to Debrecen last round, Budućnost’s hopes of reaching the round of 16 faded away.

In their previous matchup, Đer triumphed with a score of 37:19.

Right back Jelena Vukčević stated that playing against Đer is always a challenge.

“We understand the caliber of their team and the quality of their players. They boast top talent in every position and ambitious goals each season. We still possess good energy, and we aim to demonstrate that in our remaining four matches this season. An added motivation is that we are competing at home and want to put forth our best effort,” Vukčević remarked during the press conference.

She pointed out that expectations for the current season were higher, both in performance and results.

“Even though we couldn’t qualify for the round of 16, motivation should remain high. We are focused on developing ourselves as players to contribute to Budućnost and the national team in the future, so the objective is always present,” Vukčević explained.

Midfielder Nikolina Marković believes it’s unnecessary to elaborate on Đer’s quality, emphasizing that their past achievements speak for themselves.

“There’s really no need to discuss their quality; we all know the kind of team they are. Many of their players are from other national teams rather than just Hungary. We enter this match with nothing to lose, and a lot to gain, as we’re working on our own development as players. It’s crucial for us to minimize technical errors, especially in our attack. We need to have a secure and patient approach, as Đer capitalizes on every mistake we make,” Marković stated.

She also expressed her joy at having the chance to play in the Champions League.

“It’s a dream for every young player, and it’s a privilege to compete against such formidable opponents,” Marković added.

The upcoming match marks the 29th encounter between the most successful clubs from Montenegro and Hungary in European competitions.

Đer has recorded 21 wins, with four matches ending in draws, while Budućnost has secured three victories.

The Montenegrin champions have won two out of three finals so far – in 2006, they clinched the Cup Winners’ Cup after a draw in Podgorica, and on May 13, 2012, they brought home the Champions League trophy after overcoming a two-goal deficit from the first leg under the guidance of coach Dragan Adžić.

Đer secured the Champions League title in 2014 and fared better in semifinal matches during the final tournaments in Budapest in 2016 and 2017.

Five seasons ago, Đer triumphed in the Champions League quarterfinals, winning both encounters 26:20 in Podgorica and 30:28 at home.

They also emerged victorious in both quarterfinal duels of the Champions League in April 2021, winning 30:19 in Podgorica and 24:21 in Djerba.

Last season, Đer claimed victory in both group stage matches—25:23 in Podgorica and 32:19 in Djerba.

Saturday’s match at “Bemax Arena” is set to commence at 20:00.
